How To
How to use the Cannabis Aroma Kit: a step-by-step guide
Step 1: Prioritize safety
Always handle the aroma kit with care, as the bottles contain highly concentrated compounds that may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Avoid direct contact with the liquid and wash your hands thoroughly after each use. While using the kit, keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent accidental exposure. To minimize overstimulation and prolonged exposure to the aromas, it is recommended to use the kit in a well-ventilated room or outdoors. For storage, keep the bottles out of reach of children and place them in a cool, dry environment. To preserve freshness, refrigeration is recommended, but do not freeze the vials.
Step 2: Prepare your workspace
Set up your session in a clean, well-ventilated area, ideally free from any competing odors that could interfere with your sense of smell. Before you begin, gather the following materials:
- Terpene bottles
- Smell strips
- A pen
- The Terps Aromatics booklet
- Your aroma journal or notebook
- The aroma wheel (optional, but helpful)
Creating an organized and distraction-free environment will help you focus fully on the sensory experience.
Step 3: Apply terpenes to scent strips
Start by labeling each scent strip with the name of the terpene before use. Gently apply the terpene by lightly touching the tip of the strip to the bottle opening. Do not dip the strip directly into the liquid, as the paper is highly absorbent and only a small amount is needed.
Step 4: Smell and record your observations

Bring the prepared scent strip to your nose and take a few gentle sniffs. In your aroma journal, record the name of the terpene, the date and time, a description of the aroma, and any emotions or memories it evokes. Use the included aroma wheel if you need help identifying or naming specific scent notes.
Step 5: Observe aroma changes over time

Place the used scent strip in an open area and let it rest for several hours, ideally between one and six hours. Revisit it later to see how the aroma has changed in intensity or character. Record any new impressions in your journal, noting which terpenes faded quickly and which remained strong or evolved over time.
Optional: Experiment with dilution
To explore how terpene aromas shift at different concentrations, you can create diluted samples using an extra empty 5ml bottle, perfume alcohol or pure ethanol, and a syringe. Start by mixing 0.5 ml of your selected terpene with 4.5 ml of alcohol to make a 10 percent dilution. Then, take 0.5 ml of this solution and mix it with another 4.5 ml of alcohol to create a 1 percent dilution. This method helps highlight how aroma perception can change with dilution. These tools are not yet included in the kit, but we are working on offering them as an optional add-on for an enhanced learning experience.
Step 6: Train your nose regularly
Consistency is key when developing your sense of smell. Aim to practice daily or at least weekly to steadily improve your olfactory awareness. Use your aroma journal to track your observations over time. It will serve as a valuable reference for monitoring your progress and strengthening your ability to recognize specific scents.
Step 7: Make it fun and engaging

Incorporate playful and social elements into your training to keep the experience enjoyable. Try aroma games by challenging yourself or others to identify terpenes by scent alone. Turn it into a team activity, ideal for employee training sessions or interactive customer experiences that deepen product knowledge. The more often you engage with the kit, the more refined and accurate your aroma perception will become.
Ideas for games
Aroma challenge

One person selects a scent strip with an unlabeled terpene. Others take turns smelling and guessing the correct terpene based on aroma alone. Keep score. The person with the most correct answers wins.
Terpene speed round
Describe it, do not name it. One player smells a terpene and has 30 seconds to describe it using adjectives, comparisons, or impressions without saying the terpene name. The others listen and try to guess which terpene it is. The first correct guess wins the round. This game builds scent vocabulary, sharpens recognition skills, and adds a fun, competitive twist.
